Good for you Dean, you really know what you are talking about , I could not think of a better person to interview on Honduran TV , or any TV for that matter. It’s hard to intervene in another countries affairs as a US foreigner. I have gone toe to toe with African police when I saw them beat up a young girl . The police did as much as they could to get me kicked out of the country ( it did not work ) I was working for US peace corps at the time . Anyway , when we are in other countries and we see injustices , it makes my blood boil. Our US policy of intervention is a pressure cooker if you care about human rights . It’s amazing how many people just shut it off . Also it’s good for men to have a spine , we need to stand up for those that do not have a voice , just saying
Dean, I usually dont read every post, but luckily, this one I did. I was riveted. It took me back to my traveling days, where I found myself amongst the people of India and Africa. I'm sorry I cant say I ever joined a street fight with the police.
However, I DID get a creepy old Indian pervert his comeuppance, after he sexually molested an American woman I befriended. She was a newbie to India.
After trying to beat his arse myself, and terrifying his little fat clueless Indian wife, I went to the police. I suspect I wasn't the first angry white lady she had to deal with. He was a travel agent and made every attempt to use single foreign women, as the prostitutes he believed all of us to be.
The chief of police in this little town took a liking to me. When I went to him with the complaint (my friend had already left India in terror), he sent me out in a jeep, with 4 big armed Indian policeman, to pick up the little bird nosed man named Gupta. He had a tuft of black hair sticking up from his bald head, which made him look even more like a bird. That bird nearly peed his pants, when he saw me show up with those big coppers. They grabbed him and we were all escorted to the courthouse. The judge, after hearing us both speak, turned to me and said, "I believe you Madam. What do you want me to do to him?"
LOL!! That could have been really bad for him if myself and the cops were like your Honduran thugs! I said, "Well, I want him to write a letter of apology to Kara, and send her money." I asked for the equivalent of $100 bucks, which was nothing to this little creep really. When I elaborated on the letter, saying that he must say what he did, and why he was sorry, the judge looked at me in horror. "He cant do THAT Madam." It must be some kind of Indian cultural thing, that one cannot admit in writing their sin, but I insisted.
He fudged a bit though. He wrote, "I did something bad and Im sorry and I will never do it again", a rather nebulous statement. But it was all worth it. I sent the $ to Kara, who was a single mom.
She had come to India to meet a pen pal, a man who was wooing her. I met her stranded in the airport, where she told me that the guy had sent her a picture of someone else. It wasnt the same guy who met her when she arrived, so she cancelled the whole thing with him. So she was screwed over twice in India. Safely back in Seattle, she laughed when I told her what happened with good ole Mr. Gupta.
Thanks so much for that fantastic relation of your experience in Honduras Dean. You brought the place to life for me. I knew that the US was effing with the people there, but only in the general sense, because that's what they do. Now I will look at Hondurans with new sympathy and respect.

I doubt you'll be let back in. It seems that the people are waiting for a leader to kick start a revolution. Sorta like here in Alberta. Be careful!
